April 2011 Approaches - New Life?

Can things be different in training from mid-2011?
I hope so but only time will tell the tale.....

Attended SDGA v Lancashire match at Southport Old Links on 27 March. The morning foursomes were close but SDGA triumphed by 3.5 to 2.5 so after a pleasant lunch the 2 Formbytes that were playing (Kristan Taylor & James Bolton) set out for the afternoon singles.
Both continued the good work to complete a successful day with SDGA emerging victorious for the second time in 3 years, congratulations must go to their Captain, Mark Segar, from the host club - the final score being 11.5 - 6.5 to SDGA.
Prior to my first Council meeting at FGC, I have tried to communicate with the Winstanleys over Ian's future relationship with the golf club when he joins the paid ranks with Dave Patterson.
Happy 21st birthday to James Wilson yesterday - hope the new car goes well!
First Council meeting at FGC for me tonight - fully armed with paperwork and looking forward to the task whereas I cannot help remember the Final of the Amateur as the Masters approaches - the contrast in fortunes of the 2 finalists, Matteo and Sam

But 2013 will be good year as we learn that FGC will host the Brabazon Stroke Play Champs and RCPGC stages the Amateur again!

As Matteo finishes 13th in the European Tour Money List, poor old Sam Hutsby continues to struggle in the Q-School of 2012!
He finishes 44th in the 6-round final qualifying stage to miss regaining his card by 5 shots.

Competitions & Handicap Committee - Autumn 2012
Scratch Team
The scratch team continues to perform with credit and, with great support and enthusiasm from the Captain this year, won the Sutton Timmis Trophy from RLGC for the first time in many years by an comprehensive margin at FGC in July.
More recently, they were unsuccessful in the Selwyn Lloyd Inter-Club Knock-Out at RBGC but our younger team of Juniors triumphed in the national Royal British Legion tournament - a fine performance by 4 of younger juniors.
However many members of the scratch team continues to perform well as individuals and they go into the SDGA Winter Scratch League later this month with a fine chance if all are available for 8 matches.
Summer Competition Play
Throughout the Summer, the major competitions proved difficult for many with the course playing particularly long and un-forgiving as the size and extent of the rough made scoring difficult for all.
Individually, Paul Kinnear produced a stunning display to win the inaugural Wilson 36-hole FGC Stroke-play Championship with rounds of 64 and 67 for a total of 131 - he is the first winner of the newly introduced Peter Wilson Trophy which is to become a major board competition in future with a fine silver trophy being purchased specially; it will be presented to Paul in due course.
Both Clarke brothers continue to represent county and country at their respective age groups and the future remains very positive as some others move on to other pastures new.
Thanks must go to Mike Bailey and his Junior Committee for continuing the excellent work started by Martin Lawrence and Ron Wright - to name but two - our thoughts are with you Ron!
Moving Forward
The Committee has monitored the season so far and a number of suggestions have been proposed for next year to give all, whatever their ability, a fair chance to play in appropriate competition. We are all minded to help everyone play at a good pace with the minimum of hold ups - more good advice and suggestions will be forthcoming but briefly please:
Be ready to play when it is your turn
Play a provisional ball when it is appropriate
Hope to see you all at the Committee Dinner on the 2nd November - in the meantime, happy golfing festivities!
